How Does a Concealed Carry Shirt Work? What You Gain and What It Costs

A concealed carry shirt is a compression tee with a holster pocket under each arm. It trades draw speed and some heat for a belt-free carry.

Some days the belt holster stays home. Shorts with no real belt line. Gym clothes. A dress code that says tucked in and nothing showing. The gun stays in the safe, and you spend the day wishing it didn't.

A concealed carry shirt is the other route. It is a snug shirt with a holster pocket under each arm, and you wear a looser shirt over it. So how does a concealed carry shirt work, and is it worth $59? It works well for one kind of carrier, and it costs you draw speed. Below: how it works, what carriers say, and who should stay with an IWB (inside the waistband) holster and a regular shirt. We make the Phantom tee, so we say plainly where it loses.

How does a concealed carry shirt work, step by step?

A holster shirt is a compression undershirt with a pocket sewn in under each arm. 5.11's community guide describes the category the same way. You wear a looser shirt over it.

  1. The pocket sits under your arm.

The Phantom tee has two built-in holster pockets, one under each arm. It is ambidextrous, so it suits right- and left-handed carriers. The gun rides on your side, off your waistband.

  2. Compression holds it flat.

The tee is a 4-way stretch MicroPoly and Lycra compression shirt. A shirt guide dated August 2026 says the fabric has to press the gun against your ribs to work. That is why the fit is snug on purpose, and why it is less forgiving on body shape.

  3. The grip can still show.

The Firearm Blog's 2017 tester, writing about one holster shirt, said the bottom of the grip sticks up most when you face someone or stretch the shirt.

  4. The draw is the price.

You lift the top shirt with your support hand, reach across to the pocket and draw. 5.11's guide names access as the main drawback, since another shirt sits over the holster. It says to practice clearing the cover garment.

Should you buy one, or stay with IWB?

The answer follows one question: what stops you from carrying IWB today?

Pick the shirt if a belt keeps you from carrying

Does the belt keep you from carrying some days? Shorts, gym, office, a long drive. If yes, a holster shirt fills that gap.

What the shirt costs: reaching across the body to the pocket under the other arm. Under a top shirt, that reach is where draw speed goes.

Stay with IWB if speed comes first

Does your IWB rig already work every day? Then keep it. Brawny's comment below is the case for staying put.

Do you run warm, put speed first or wear 4XL and up? Then a holster shirt is probably the wrong tool.

One YouTube commenter, writing about carrying in a tucked-in shirt rather than a holster shirt, boiled the trade down to a line.

“Longer draw is better than no draw because you can’t carry.”
@Cincinnatis, YouTube comment on a PHLster video about carrying in a tucked-in shirt, May 10, 2026 · YouTube

The best use is as a second rig. IWB on the days it works, the shirt on the days it doesn't.

Holster shirt or IWB plus a regular shirt: what changes?

This table is our read, built from the sources and product pages named in the cells. Prices were checked on October 22, 2026.

What you compare IWB holster + regular shirt Phantom tee Phantom holster shirt
Draw speed Faster. Alien Gear says a well-fitted tuckable holster gives faster access for most carriers Slower. You lift the top shirt, reach across and draw Same trade as the tee
Trigger cover and retention Set by the holster you pick Not stated on the product page Not stated on the product page. Hook-and-loop flaps seal the pockets
Belt and waistband Needs a belt. Clip, waistband pressure and beltline printing are in play No belt. No clip or waistband edge No belt. No clip or waistband edge
Heat One regular shirt over the gun A snug layer under your top shirt. Can run warm Moisture-wicking base layer, still a snug layer
Washing Not an issue Machine washable. Plan on more than one Machine washable, hang dry. Plan on more than one
Size and price Depends on the holster S to 3XL, compression fit, $59 S to 3XL, order one size up, $59

UnderTech lists its crew tee at $29.99 on sale (regular $59.99). A shirt guide dated August 29, 2026 lists the Graystone crew at $39.99. Both cost less than ours. We sell on the 90-day return, not the price.

Why carry in a shirt instead of on a belt?

Where it works

A belt holster ties the gun to your waistband. That works in jeans with a gun belt. It works less well in shorts, sweats and tucked dress shirts, or after eight hours in a car seat.

Alien Gear, a holster maker, writes that holster shirts mean no belt clips, no waistband pressure and no printing from holster bulk at the beltline, and that how well the gun stays put depends on the shirt. For some carriers it goes beyond comfort. It's the job.

  • Shorts, sweats and gym days. The gun doesn't depend on your pants, so shorts and sweats work. The top shirt just has to hang loose.
  • Long drives. The Firearm Blog's 2017 tester called a holster shirt the most comfortable option for long drives. That's one tester and one shirt, so test your own.
  • Strict workplaces. The commenter below couldn't wear an IWB holster at work. A holster shirt let him carry.
  • Concealment first. Concealed Carry Outlet, a retailer, says holster shirts suit buyers who value concealment over quick access.
“This is great for carrying at work. Nobody can even see my m&p shield at all. No printing no chance of getting fired. Wearing an iwb holster is out of the question because if anyone seen it I could lose my livelihood.”
@Theyoufeelme, YouTube comment on a 5.11 holster shirt review, April 23, 2022 · YouTube

A comment like that explains why these shirts exist: they cover the days a waistband rig is off the table. Check your workplace policy and your local rules first. This page can't answer that for you.

Where does a concealed carry shirt fall short?

A carry vest over a tee. Past 3XL, a vest is one belt-free option: Phantom's Premium vest runs S to 5XL.

Where it falls short

  • Hot weather, if you run warm. Concealed Carry Outlet says holster shirts can be warm in summer. A desert reader's comment is below.
  • When speed comes first. Alien Gear says a well-fitted tuckable holster (made to wear under a tucked-in shirt) still gives faster access and firmer retention for most carriers.
  • Big sizes. The Phantom tee stops at 3XL. One shirt guide puts it this way: "a compression garment in a large size is still a compression garment". For 4XL and up, read our guide to concealed carry for big guys. Phantom's Premium vest, for one, runs S to 5XL.
  • Bigger guns. Concealed Carry Outlet says holster shirts are meant for small to medium pistols. The Phantom holster shirt page says compact and subcompact guns seat deepest and conceal flattest.

If the shirt falls short for you, Phantom also makes carry boxer-briefs. They put two built-in holsters in the underwear itself, with no belt and no extra shirt layer. They run S to 3XL.

Phantom tee or Phantom holster shirt: which one?

If a shirt is worth a try, Phantom makes two. Both cost $59 and run S to 3XL. The tee is a plain crew neck. The holster shirt adds sealed flap pockets and a shoulder yoke. Start with the tee, and pick the holster shirt if flap pockets matter to you.

How do you wear a concealed carry shirt? Size, layers and a home check

This is a home checklist built from what carriers and makers report. It is not a lab test and not our own test. Use an unloaded gun for any step that involves one.

  1. Size by the chart

Phantom's tee chart runs from S (chest 35 to 37 in, waist 29 to 32 in) to 3XL (chest 53 to 58 in, waist 47 to 52 in). The tee page says to size up if you're between sizes. The holster shirt page says to order one size up. A forum member wrote about a 5.11 tee: "order your garment at least one or two sizes larger than you are accustomed to wearing". That was about 5.11's shirt, so use the Phantom chart for ours.

  2. Pick a top that hangs loose

Choose a top that hangs loose over your ribs and falls past your waist. A shirt stretched tight across your side shows the grip, which is what the Firearm Blog tester warned about.

  3. Run the outline check

Stand side-on to a mirror, then film a short walk, sit, bend and reach on your phone. Watch the video, not just the mirror. Our guide on how to run an outline check and conceal carry without printing shows the full routine.

Side-on is the angle for the outline check. Look at the ribs in the mirror, then on video as you move.

What should you check before carrying in it every day?

  1. Check the trigger cover and the hold

Two checks matter most. Is the trigger covered inside the pocket? Does the gun stay put when you bend? A viewer of a 5.11 shirt review wrote "Con.. I didn't see any type of trigger guard at all." The Firearm Blog's 2017 tester, writing about a different shirt, said it shouldn't be worn as sold for the same reason. Another viewer, about an older 5.11 shirt, wrote "If I leaned forward the pistol would fall out right through the velco." Neither comment is about Phantom.

The Phantom tee page doesn't say whether the pocket covers the trigger. Until you know, carry only a gun in a holster or cover that protects the trigger guard, and run the bend test unloaded. Ask support if you want an answer before you order.

  2. Practice the draw slowly

With an unloaded gun and your finger off the trigger, practice lifting the top shirt, reaching across and drawing. 5.11's guide says to practice clearing the cover garment. USA Carry warns that the garment can get in the way of a good draw or a safe re-holster, and that even the tightest undershirt will usually shift around after more than a few draw strokes. Check where the pocket ends up each time.

  3. Wash it and keep a spare

The Firearm Blog's tester said to wash a holster shirt about weekly. A YouTube viewer wrote "another problem... how often do you wear a shirt without washing it? You'd have to either wash it every night, or buy 6 or 7 of them if you carry that way every day." The Phantom tee is machine washable, and so is the holster shirt (hang dry). Two shirts in rotation is a sensible start.

What do carriers say about concealed carry shirts?

“For a situation when it is absolutely critical that you do not print, they are above reproach.”
Bassbob, The Armory Life forum, April 24, 2022, on holster t-shirts · The Armory Life
“Truspec has a similar shirt. They are hot but if you already have to wear a dress shirt it's not different. You do have to get use to the "compression" side of it. Draw isn't clean but if you can't wear an IWB hoster due to "work". Better to carry than not.”
@FOGHORNNC, YouTube comment on a 5.11 holster shirt review, July 30, 2017 (older) · YouTube
“They are extremely tight and warm... for a desert dweller like myself, they're not ideal.”
RealitiCzech, reader comment on The Firearm Blog, 2017 (older) · The Firearm Blog
“I'm up for trying something new, but I think I'll just stick with what works...my crucial concealment IWB.”

Questions people ask about concealed carry shirts

Is a concealed carry shirt slower than IWB?

Yes, by the sources we read. Alien Gear and 5.11 both name the draw as the trade: you lift a top shirt first. Practice with an unloaded gun to see your own gap.

Is a concealed carry shirt hot in summer?

It can be. It's a snug layer under your top shirt, and Concealed Carry Outlet says holster shirts can be warm in summer. If you run warm, a belly band holster is another belt-free option. Phantom's is $39, one size, and fits up to a 45 in circumference.

Can I carry a full-size gun in a holster shirt?

Smaller guns fit better, by the sources we read. Concealed Carry Outlet says holster shirts are meant for small to medium pistols. Check the fit list on the product page, and ask support if your gun isn't there.

Do I need more than one?

If you wear it daily, probably. The Firearm Blog's tester said to wash a holster shirt about weekly. The tee page lists pricing for two or three.

Try the tee for 90 days

Wear it on the days IWB can't work: shorts, a long drive, a strict workplace. Run the home checks above with an unloaded gun. If the trade isn't worth it for you, send it back.

  • Best for: carriers who leave the gun home on shorts, gym, long-drive or dress-code days and want a second rig beside a good IWB setup.
  • Skip it if: draw speed comes first, heat is your main problem or you wear 4XL and up. Our big guys guide covers those sizes.
  • Questions about trigger cover? Ask support before you order. The page doesn't answer them.
  • Buy 2 for $106.20 (10% off) or buy 3 for $150.45 (15% off). Both bundles ship free.
