CARRY GUIDE

Best Concealed Carry Vest: Five Brands Compared on Price, Size and Carry

Pick by climate, size and carry method. Five brands side by side, with prices and stock checked October 22, 2026, and the spots where Phantom loses. It's a spec comparison from the makers' pages, not a wear test.

You want the best concealed carry vest, and you're afraid of one thing: looking like you're about to go fishing. Maybe your belt holster digs in when you sit. Maybe you're sweating through a layer by noon. A vest looks like the fix until you see 24 pockets.

Five brands, six vests, and every price and spec taken from the maker's own page on October 22, 2026. We make two of them, so we'll say plainly where the others beat us. Some of them do.

How do you pick the best concealed carry vest?

We use five checks. Each one answers something carriers complain about, and each one can be checked on a product page. Where a page is silent, the table says not stated. That's a fact about the page, not about the vest.

Who should skip ours

Undertech is cheaper and lists nearly the same features

Undertech's Lightweight Concealed Carry Vest is $49.99 on sale, while ours is $79. Both pages claim pockets that can take a full-size 1911 or Glock 21, then add that lighter or compact handguns work best.

Both include one universal handgun holster. Both advise ordering the next size up for a looser fit and less printing. Both list two large inside zip pockets.

On October 22, only the Blue vest in Medium and Large was in stock. Every Black size and Blue 3XL were sold out, and the store lists no Blue XL or 2XL.

The Tropic lists a weight and a vented back

ConcealedCarry.com's Tropic is $49.99 and lists 13.7 oz. The page also lists a "full width vented back" and mesh inside shoulder lining. Phantom's page lists neither a weight nor venting. For heat, that gap matters.

The catch is the holster. The Tropic's page doesn't say one is included. It describes a 4-inch hook and loop patch that holds "any hook/loop pocket holster" you supply, so you'd buy a holster on top. Its page shows 4.20 out of 5 from 15 customer ratings. That's a small sample.

Rothco and 5.11 win on pockets and weather

Rothco's page describes 24 utility pockets, 16 of them on the front, and starts at $100.99 on rothco.com. The 5.11 Covert is a bonded softshell that its page calls water and wind resistant. It showed Out of Stock with no price when we checked.

Who ours suits

  • Sizes. The Phantom Premium vest runs S to 5XL in Black, Beige and Gray. Undertech lists Medium to 3XL. The Tropic also reaches 5XL.
  • Up to 6XL. The Phantom vest for big guys lists S to 6XL. Of the vests whose pages list sizes for the product, it's the only one past 5XL, though 6XL was sold out on Oct 22.
  • A holster in the box. The Premium vest includes an ambidextrous universal handgun holster. The Tropic's page doesn't say one is included. Undertech includes one too.
  • A stated return window. Phantom's page says "Wear it 90 days. Risk-free." under a 90-day money-back guarantee banner. The big guys page says the same. We found no return terms on the other four makers' product pages, so read each store's policy before you buy.

Which concealed carry vest comes in big sizes?

At 3XL and up, the field narrows fast. Undertech stops at 3XL and Rothco stops at 4XL. The Tropic and the Phantom Premium vest both reach 5XL. Of the pages that list sizes for the product, only the Phantom vest for big guys lists 6XL, in Black, Beige and Gray.

All three 6XL colors were sold out on October 22. Its size chart gives the waist from 38 to 43 in at XL to 62 to 67 in at 6X.

Measure your waist where the vest will sit. One r/CCW poster describes his build this way: "My muffin top area is the widest part of my body." The Phantom page says vest measurements run somewhat snug around the waist when zipped, so size by waist and go up between sizes.

Is there a concealed carry vest for summer?

Not from Phantom. We won't call our vest a summer vest, because its page lists no weight and no venting. The page does say "Lightweight, low-profile construction" in its material section.

Undertech's page uses the word lightweight in the product name but says "Mid-weight, insulated for warmth" in its material line. Neither gives a weight in ounces. The word lightweight is not a measurement.

In a thread about summer vests, one r/CCW poster wrote "Most are designed to keep you warm, which I don’t want." In a different thread, another says he covers his gun with a vest, flannel or jacket, which makes it, in his words, "primarily my colder weather carry."

If heat is your problem, you have two honest options. The Tropic lists 13.7 oz, mesh shoulder lining and a vented back. Rothco lists a vented mesh back but no weight.

Or skip the extra layer. Our guide on how to conceal carry without printing covers fixes that don't add one, and concealed carry for big guys covers bigger builds.

Does a concealed carry vest look like a fishing vest or a shoot me first jacket?

That's the fear, and carriers say it out loud. One r/CCW user passes along a line he attributes to Mas Ayoob. It's second-hand, so we're quoting the user, not Ayoob.

What else r/CCW says about vests and being noticed

“The only issue with vests is once you go too light they just look like you’re about to go fishing”

“Ive never seen a summer vest that didnt scream "im carrying a gun"”
u/sp3kter on r/CCW · Reddit
“It only screams gun to people on Reddit. Most normal people don’t care or don’t know.”

“Yes, you’re printing a bit. No, no one is paying attention.”
u/Cboals923 on r/CCW, in a PSA thread about printing in general, not vests · Reddit

Four comments don't settle anything. Two posters say a vest can read as gear or as a fishing vest. Two say most people don't notice, one of them about printing in general.

Here's what we'd do about it. Pick a plain color. Skip the vests built like a pocket wall. Size for a looser drape: the Phantom and Undertech pages both suggest the next size up to reduce printing. No vest makes a gun disappear, and a vest can still print.

How does a concealed carry vest hold the gun?

A vest moves the gun off your belt and into an inside pocket. The pocket has a velcro panel, and the holster sticks to it. Phantom's page describes an "integrated velcro holster system" that lets you place the gun where it's most comfortable.

Two things follow. There's no belt holster for your belly to press on when you sit. And the vest does all the hiding, so its fit decides how much shows.

Trigger safety doesn't change. A pocket is not a holster. The pistol needs a holster that covers the trigger guard, whatever vest you choose.

  1. The holster rides in the pocket. The Phantom Premium vest includes one ambidextrous universal handgun holster. Undertech's page lists a universal holster too. The Tropic's page describes a hook and loop patch for your own.
  2. The pocket sits inside the vest. Phantom's page lists two large interior zippered concealment pockets. Undertech's lists two large inside pockets with key-locking zippers.
  3. Fit sets what shows. Phantom's page says it runs somewhat snug at the waist when zipped, and suggests the next size up to reduce printing.

How do you check a vest at home before you trust it?

Standing still is the easy part. This is a home checklist, not a lab test. Use an unloaded gun or a training replica, in a holster that covers the trigger guard.

  1. Zip it and stand

Put the vest on over the shirt you'd wear. Zip it. Prop your phone at belt height about ten feet away and take one side photo standing still.

  2. Sit for two full minutes

Use a firm chair, then slouch. Notice where the pocket sits against your stomach and whether the vest rides up or bunches.

  3. Try the driver's seat

Park with the engine off. Buckle the seat belt and put your hands on the wheel. Check that the belt doesn't press on the pocket and that your hand can still reach it.

  4. Reach and bend

Reach for a top shelf. Bend and pick something off the floor. Twist toward the back seat. Check where the pocket and the vest front end up after each move.

  5. Watch the video, then change one thing

Record a walk past the camera, a sit and a stand. Trust the video over the mirror, because it shows the angle other people see. If it prints, change one thing, like the size, and run the check again.

Questions about concealed carry vests

Do concealed carry vests work?

For one job, yes. A vest hides a holster pocket under a cover layer and keeps the gun off your belt. It doesn't make a gun invisible, and it's an extra layer in the heat. Fit and color decide a lot, so run the home check before you trust any vest.

How do you conceal carry with a vest?

The gun rides in an inside pocket with a velcro panel, in a holster that covers the trigger guard. The vest is the cover, so size it for a looser drape. Do the home check with an unloaded gun first.

Is there a lightweight concealed carry vest for hot weather?

Only one page in the table gives ounces: the Tropic at 13.7 oz, with a vented back. Phantom's page says "Lightweight, low-profile construction" but lists no weight or venting, so we don't call it a summer vest. Rothco lists a vented mesh back but no weight.

Does Phantom make a concealed carry vest for big guys?

Yes. The vest for big guys lists S to 6XL at $79 in Black, Beige and Gray. 6XL was sold out on October 22. Measure your waist and size up between sizes.

Order your size, work through the check above with an unloaded gun, then keep it or use the 90-day money-back guarantee.

  • Pick it if you want a holster in the box, a plain color and sizes up to 5XL. The vest for big guys lists 6XL, and its page doesn't say a holster is included.
  • Skip it if the lowest price decides (Undertech lists $49.99 on sale) or heat is the main problem (the Tropic lists 13.7 oz and a vented back).
  • Sizing: the page says it runs somewhat snug at the waist when zipped. Between sizes, order the next size up.
  • It was on pre-order on October 22. The page says orders ship within 4 to 6 weeks and calls that timeline an estimate.
